I’ve always been sceptical of “meat free” burgers in the same way I’m still not convinced on protein “cookies” but I thought I’d try out some black bean burgers seeing as I had loads of black beans lying around!
Now if you’re expecting the same texture as a big ol’ beef burger then you’ll be sorely disappointed. They are a lot “mushier” (is that even a word?) but not necessarily in a bad way. They hold together really well and are so versatile with flavours. These ones are really simple and taste great but feel free to add your own spices!
Black Bean Burgers
- 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 whole egg
- 50 g breadcrumbs
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tsp chilli powder (optional)
- salt & pepper, to taste
Combine all ingredients and blend to a smooth consistency
With wet hands, shape into 4 burgers and put in the fridge until firm
Fry in a skillet, around 3-5 minutes on each side until cooked through
